A Secret Love

Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel met in 1947 while playing hockey in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They were immediately attracted to each other and soon formed a lifelong partnership that lasted for 72 years. A Secret Love engagingly tells the story of their relationship formed during a time when same sex couples were extremely vulnerable to societal scorn and persecution, and family rejection.

Linking Up: The Graying of AIDs

Well-known gerontologist Dr. James Birren once told me that in the late 1940s, all of the gerontologists in the United States could fit comfortably in one modest size hotel meeting room. He should know; he was there. Thanks to the leadership of Birren and so many others, modern gerontology has advanced vigorously since those days. Since its founding in 1945, the Gerontological Society of America has provided a formal organization for linking the diverse disciplines defining the study of aging and aged individuals.

Beginners opens with two silent shots—a close up of a vase of semi-fresh daisies and then a vacant living room with several boxes stacked to one side. In the next scene, also mostly silent, a young man removes some shirts from a closet, folds them, and places them in a box.

Wanting to end on a lighter note, our final film was Cloudburst, a good-natured comedy starring Olivia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, about a lesbian couple who takes a road trip to Canada to get married.

Grandma opens with the epigram “Time Passes, that’s for sure.” The film takes place in a single day and takes the form of a mini-road trip on which Elle (Lilly Tomlin)—a grandmother in her 70s who has just cut up her credit cards and is broke—sets out with her pregnant granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) to find $630 for an abortion and make it to her late afternoon appointment at a women’s health clinic.

Ten More Good Years

Ten More Good Years documents the experience of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender aging. Prior to viewing this outstanding film, I wondered why anyone with any sensitivity would lump lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender aging within one now-familiar acronym—LGBT. Categorical thinking, after all, makes far too easy the negative stereotyping and discrimination used so often to create, denigrate, and disenfranchise those who are not “straight.”
